During the past years, technology has paved the way for us to reinvent our way of communicating, becoming a more technological being. 30 years ago none could’ve imagined today’s bets for the future; a metauniverse is on the way, as well as more advanced human-like robots, putting virtual reality and artificial intelligence at the center of discussions.
It’s clear that the future awaiting is a future where humanity is more symbiotic with technology, at the point where without it, humans become almost useless. It’s something that will become unavoidable sooner than later, whether we like it or not. And it’s not something that we should take as a threat to our human nature but as an opportunity to become better and more productive. At the end of the day, it’s not about the what but about the how; how we take advantage of technological rumbling advances. And many people are precisely doing that by reshaping their way of doing business.
It became more tangible when the pandemic hit us, many people had to leave their offices and turn their bedrooms into office space, having to attend meetings while dogs and cats are running across in the background. But it became evident that we can also be productive from home, avoiding some issues related to working at the office such as the traffic congestions and having to put up with annoying colleagues. This led to some businesses reshaping their business into a more virtual space where all of the core operations are performed miles away by independent workers, also called freelancers.
Freelancers are independent contractors that provide services from outside a business, meaning that the business isn’t responsible for paying expenses and taxes derived from the labor. Freelancers work as a business their own, meaning they handle all of the tasks a business manager would normally do: managing the money, taking care of the expenses, and delivering the projects. If experienced enough, freelancers can perform a better job than an employee since they tend to be more specialized and they normally cope with multiple clients at the same time. That’s why many business owners have seen this as a great opportunity to save expenses without having to sacrifice talent and quality.
These digital businesses are becoming more and more popular due to the advantages it brings: not needing to rent office spaces, saving employee expenses, getting job quality, and the easiness of hiring. There are many freelancers platforms that ensure a business gets the specific talent it needs. Upwork is one of those platforms, and the hiring is just a few clicks away; you would just post your job requirements and you will start getting proposals from interested people. Thereafter you’d only need to send an invitation for an interview to the prospects. There’s also the Upwork competition called Fiverr, a place where freelancers post their services for sale. You would only need to search for the specific service you need and buy it from the best freelancer.
And although some might think that freelancing is a difficult road, it’s been a great opportunity for people that were hit by the effects of the pandemic. Many high talent professionals lost their jobs and built a very profitable business by becoming freelancers. It wouldn’t be surprising that in some years part of business labors are being performed by machines and the other part being handled by independent professionals. After all, technology has made it easier for us to stay connected despite being far away.
