On January 31 of this year, Team17 studio announced that it is preparing to release its own collection of non-fungible tokens based on characters from the Worms series of games. The company said the tokens in the collection are environmentally friendly and registering 100,000 NFTs will require the same amount of electricity as 11 household electric kettles consume in a year. Also, in the course of communication with employees, it turned out that the fact of creating tokens was hidden from employees.
Immediately after the statement, the indie studio Aggro Crab Games, which works with Team17, published a tweet criticizing the company’s decision in a rude manner. The studio abandoned future joint projects and encouraged other developers to do the same. Among other things, Aggro Crab Games has stated that NFTs cannot be environmentally friendly or beneficial. They also paid attention to Team17 employees, asking them not to harass them and not write insults to them, explaining this by the fact that most of them did not know about the launch of the project.
Along with Aggro Crab Games, SMG and Navegante published statements. The companies emphasized that they are not going to integrate NFT into their projects and believe that the industry should make games for entertainment, and not implement P2E (Play-to-Earn) mechanics.
